Here are some of the most important handpan care instructions in the form of Do’s and Don’ts that will help you care for your handpan

Do’s

  • Remove rubber edge protection whilst playing your handpan to produce clear long tones
  • Apply few drops of coconut oil or an approved handpan care oil such as Phoenix Oil on playing surface and wipe off excess with a microfiber cloth after playing (especially if playing by a beach).
  • Play with your fingers gently, bouncing your finger off the handpan to create long tones
  • Keep the resonant hole open whilst playing.
  • Cover the edge of your handpan with the provided rubber protection during travel.
  • Carry your handpan as a cabin baggage during air travel
  • Store your handpan outside the bag in a cool, dry place
  • Use reputed stands, mounts and cases that would ensure your instrument stays protected.
  • Explore the different sounds and pressure ranges (within acceptable limits) that your handpan is capable of, and enjoy creating your own music
  • Learn to play your handpan by exploring it yourself or by following a tutorial

Dont’s

  • Do not play with sticks or rubber mallets or finger-rings
  • Do not check-in your handpan unless you have a hardcase
  • Do not place the handpan inverted on the ding or on the rim
  • Do not store your handpan in the bag or leave any cloth on your handpan
  • Do not let salt water or sand get into or on the handpan – if it does, clean the box thoroughly
  • Do not play the handpan hard or in any other way that might cause the instrument to detune
  • Do not place your handpan on surfaces from where it could fall (eg. bad quality wall hangers or stands)
  • Do not place anything over your handpan that could slip and fall onto your handpan (eg. mics, beer mugs) etc.
